Cabinets around a fireplace have to keep a safe distance from the heat, and that distance is set by the fireplace manufacturer rather than by preference. We work to those figures and build the surround, mantel and side storage as one unit.

Shelving either side of the media wall, adjustable rather than fixed, because what sits on it changes. Paperbacks today, records or board games later, without a rebuild.

LED strips under the shelves light up what is on display without glaring off the screen, and a dimmer lets the whole wall drop back when the television is on. Outlets go inside the equipment bays where you can actually reach them, and speaker cable is run through the cabinets during the build instead of clipped to the wall afterwards.

Openings for cables and hidden outlets are planned before we build, not cut in afterwards. Anything that gets warm, like a receiver or a games console, gets a bay with room around it and a way for the heat to escape, rather than being sealed in a closed box.

The two sizes that matter are the screen you are mounting now and the one you might mount later. We leave headroom so a bigger television does not mean rebuilding the unit.
